Conklin editorials troubling

Your recent editorials lambasting Bruce Conklin are troubling for five reasons:

1. They violated journalistic standards. You published your opinions before publishing the facts. Becky Trout’s two-part investigative piece (finding no legal wrongdoing) came out days after your mud-slinging.

2. They showed egregious bias. Earlier you gave free campaign publicity to Spencer with a front-page article and photo of his campaign poster. Where are your front-page photos of Stevens and Conklin posters, for balance?

3. They showed a double standard. If giving jobs to friends makes one unfit to govern, then Bush and Cheney are obviously unfit. Where are your condemnations of them for giving huge contracts to Halliburton?

4. They were socially irresponsible. In a community where politics gets polarized, you are in effect playing with matches in a brush pile. The community depends on a paper to publish informed opinions, not inflammatory diatribes.

5. They probably were libelous. Last time I checked, harming someone’s reputation by false statements of fact is against the law in this country.

In short, the community deserves better from this paper. Way better.
