Composers Cooperative performs at festival

This is a busy time for the Nevada County Composers Cooperative.

Two of its concerts this weekend are tied in with Music in the Mountains’ Summer Festival at the Nevada County Fairgrounds.

The “Young Composers Showcase Concert” Friday at 7:30 p.m. features several youth who have worked this year with composers Howard Hersh, Mark Vance and W. Jay Sydeman of the cooperative. These compositions will be performed by Music in the Mountains’ Festival Orchestra members. Tickets are $5 for adults and free for students 17 and under.

On Sunday, the cooperative will present its fifth annual Festival of New Music, which kicks off with a preconcert talk at 7 p.m. followed by the music at 8 p.m.

Featured will be composer Jerry Grant ‘s “Introduction, Fanfare and Hymn” for brass quintet, Sydeman’s “Duo for Trumpet and Percussion,” Mikail Graham’s “50, A Conversation,” Hersh’s “Braided River Nights,” Vance’s “Nevada County Epitaphs,” and Nancy Bloomer Deussen’s “Tribute to the Ancients.”

Sunday’s tickets are $18 in advance and $23 at the door for adults and $5 for youth.

Both concerts will be held in the Nevada County Fairgrounds’ Family Festival Center.
