A real Christmas, thanks to The Newcomers Club

Members of The Newcomers Club of Nevada County show off a donated mountain bike, which will go to a teen in need for Christmas. This season, the club is buying Christmas gifts for over 100 children from low income families.

Thanks to aggressive budgeting and donations (both members and non-members), the Newcomers Club of Nevada County will provide 101 children from 41 families in need with Christmas gifts. The club has established close partnerships with several Nevada County nonprofits, including Helping Hands Nurturing Center, The Friendship Club and Women of Worth, all of which screen and identify candidates that truly need a “hand up” during this difficult COVID-19 year.

“Wish lists” are submitted, which virtually guarantee that at least one child’s wish will come true, said organizers. Many families were hard hit financially due to the pandemic, making Christmas budgets lean or non-existent. The “Special Items Team” at the Newcomers Club was able to obtain a donated bicycle from the Seven Hills Bicycle Recycle Project for a teen who wanted to join the school mountain biking team. A toddler will sleep in a new bed and more bikes and scooters will also be under the tree come Christmas morning. Club members have been busier than ever with donations, shopping, wrapping and delivering presents.

Of the 19 years of the club’s Christmas Families Project, 2020 feels special, say organizers, as those more fortunate have stepped up and helped others less fortunate in a much bigger way.
