Commission passes Weaver plan

The Weaver auto dealership proposed for Idaho-Maryland Road sailed through the Grass Valley Planning Commission Tuesday night, approved on a 4-0 vote with very little debate.

Thought to be controversial, the Weaver issue attracted a huge contingent of friends, employees, and community members, sporting stickers and ready to defend the influential Nevada County family.

But Commissioner Gloria Hyde told the crowd to save their speeches because the commission would probably approve the item.

And it did, after watching a computer-generated simulation of the project. The two buildings, a total of 32,600 square feet, will be on a sloping 9-acre parcel north of Idaho-Maryland Road beside the Golden Center Freeway.

The smaller sales center will be visible from Idaho-Maryland, but the larger service center will be sheltered from view by the slope, builder Chuck Chatfield said.

Chatfield said the Weaver’s invested heavily in landscaping. “I can guarantee in ten years you won’t see (the buildings) at all,” Chatfield said.

City planners also cautioned the Weavers on the use of lighting and signs, both of which have been toned down to satisfy the city.

The project must still be approved by the City Council before construction begins.
