Comic to deliver arresting routine

If you have to get a ticket, you might want to get one from Michael Mancini.

The Santa Cruz harbor patrol cop will probably also deliver a joke or two. Or he might forego the ticket in lieu of a lecture and the jokes.

In his off hours, Mancini performs comedy, which started when he entered a competition just for fun in Monterey in 1984.

Although it was Mancini’s first time, the competition sponsor liked his humor and took him under his wings.

But after spending 40 weeks on the comedy circuit for more than 10 years, Mancini wanted to be closer to home. He followed his first dream and became a cop five years ago. He now does comedy in his spare time, when he’s not pulling people over.

“The good thing about comedy is, it’s a really powerful tool in stressful situations,” Mancini said. “If you crack a joke, it lightens up a situation. When you’re arresting someone, when they’re all bummed out going to jail, it can help.”

He will headline Saturday’s Comedy Night at the Holbrooke Hotel with policemen stories and relationship jokes.

“I let the audience know cops are not supermen. I do stupid things like everyone else,” Mancini said.

Saturday’s doors open at 8:30 p.m.; the show starts at 9 p.m. in the Iron Door room. The Holbrooke is at 212 W. Main St., Grass Valley.

Admission is $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Call 263-4544 for Comedy Night reservations or information.
