Club news: Nevada County Historical Society

Those wild and lusty gold camps, as described in a book of the same name, will be discussed by the book’s author, Alton Pryor, when the Nevada County Historical Society presents its March program Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Pryor, a Roseville publisher, is a seasoned journalist who wrote for magazines, newspapers, and wire services for 50 years. He worked for United Press International in their Sacramento Bureau, handling both printed press as well as radio news.

In 1963, he joined California Farmer magazine where he worked as a field editor for 27 years. After leaving that post in 1990, he gained an intense interest in California and Western history after selling a number of short articles on Southern California history. In his research of these stories, he kept finding other stories that interested him but did not fit the particular publication for whom he was then writing. He collected both facts and ideas as he researched, and finally turned them into his first book, “Little Known Tales in California History.” A dozen more titles have followed.

Pryor’s presentation will be open to the public. It will be held at the Transportation Museum, 15 Kidder Ct., Nevada City. Refreshments will be served. For more information call Bedford Lampkin, program chairman at 477-8633.
