Club brief: Daughters of the American Revolution

The March 27 meeting of the Captain John Oldham Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), to be held at Alta Sierra Country Club, will feature Joe Byrne, new director of the North Star Steering Committee and board member of the Nevada County Land Trust Board who will discuss the background and future of the North Star Historic Project. Byrne has a strong background in real estate development throughout the western states and has worked with the Muir Heritage Land Trust and various naturalist activities.

The North Star House in Nevada County, built in 1905, was one of pioneer architect Julia Morgan’s earliest works. The North Star House is a massive Arts and Crafts design, constructed from local mine rock, paneled in redwood and shingled with cedar.

In 2002, the Nevada County Land Trust entered an agreement with Nevada County to seek park and open space lands at the North Star property. The Land Trust took control of the North Star Historic District in August 2003 and has since demolished the non-historic additions, restored the chimneys, repaired the structural members of the North Star House, and begun emergency repairs on the other structures of the site. This program will be a wonderful opportunity to become current with this historical endeavor.
