Climate change is real

In a recent “Other Voices” column, Assemblyman Rick Keene refers to the “junk science of the left” that he feels led to Governor Schwarzenegger’s signing of the California Global Warning Solutions Act of 2006. More than 2,500 climate scientists from around the world who dedicate their lives to the study of climate science recently “unequivocally affirmed the warming of our climate system, and linked it directly to human activity.”

Expert researchers in California agree, and they have spent years determining and documenting the extent of climate change, its current and potential impacts on California and methods to mitigate the problems. This research identified harmful impacts on citizen health and the state’s agriculture, water and energy systems, coast and economy. Based on this peer-reviewed research and other factors, Gov. Schwarzenegger wisely signed the bill into law to protect California from devastating effects on its infrastructure and businesses.

Assemblyman Keene’s disturbing rejection of widespread scientific evidence and his preference for divisive, partisan-based conjecture undercuts his credibility. The 3rd District would be better served by a politician who can craft logical, workable solutions to real-world problems instead of ignoring proven evidence and harping on others’ alleged shortcomings to shore up his own insupportable position.
