Classic films grace the big screen at the Del Oro

The Del Oro Theatre continues its popular Classic Movie Series this fall beginning Monday, Sept. 20 with the 1959 epic Ben Hur, starring Charlton Heston. For the following eight weeks, ending Nov. 9, you’ll have the chance to see some of the greatest movies ever made up on the big screen with a live theater audience.

The fall series is a selection of classics based once again on suggestions from audiences and includes eight movies you won’t want to miss! Ben Hur showcases one of the most spectacular action sequences of all time: The chariot race. Filmed on an 18-acre film set (the largest ever built) outside of Rome long before the advent of computer-generated effects, the scene used 15,000 extras and took five weeks to film. The film won an unprecedented 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director (William Wyler) and Best Cinematography. Following Ben Hur comes Giant, the sprawling 1956 epic of life on a Texas oil ranch starring Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean. The film portrays the transformation of Texas ranchers by the oil industry. Giant was the last of James Dean’s three films as a leading actor and earned him his second and last Academy Award nomination – he was killed in a car accident before the film was released.

To lighten the mood, come see An American in Paris (1951) with Gene Kelly on Oct. 4 and 5 and round out your movie-going experience with the classic Hitchcock film starring Cary Grant, North by Northwest, on Oct. 11 and 12. This film features the famous crop-duster scene, sure to be impressive on the big screen.

The last four weeks of the series bring more great moviemaking and unforgettable acting by Marlon Brando, Clint Eastwood and Fred Astaire.

Classic Movies on the Big Screen will show at 7 p.m. every Monday and 1 p.m. Tuesday from Sept. 20 through Nov. 9. Regular admission will apply: $8.50 for adults and $6.50 for seniors and children and all matinee seats. Discount Series Passes will be available for purchase at the Del Oro box office and BriarPatch.
