City’s $1,000 fee was shameful

I am writing to tell you how sad and bad I felt on Sunday, May 25, when Father Sylvester of St. Patrick’s Church in Grass Valley announced that the city manager of Grass Valley charged $1,000 for a permit to have a procession no more than two blocks long. He should be ashamed of himself to do such a thing.

I have been in many poor countries of Latin America and also in Europe and have never heard of such a thing. Father Sylvester comes from Poland and Italy and in my opinion he is doing a great job trying to bring to Grass Valley a great deal of love and compassion and unity for the community. I say again, shame, shame!

I and my late husband retired to Grass Valley in 1992. My husband retired from Lockheed in Sunnyvale as subcontractor administrator. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus and this is one of the reasons I am writing this letter in his name. I am sure he would have done so himself.

I assure you it was a beautiful procession, but I was so sad and my heart cried that a beautiful country like Amer-ica would come to this, where people have to pay a price for such a wonderful occasion.
