Cement Hill could get water soon

The long wait for water may soon be over for up to 250 Cement Hill Road landowners near Nevada City.

Wednesday the Nevada Irrigation District Board of Directors approved a project environmental study for the homeowners who now rely on well and canal water. The project includes a new 800,000-gallon storage tank, a pump station and about 58,000 feet of main lines.

NID has applied for a $9.8 million low-interest state loan to finance the project to be repaid by property owners who receive the new water supply. Property owners must now approve a community facilities district and special tax levy.

An election is being planned for later this year. NID directors will consider a mitigation plan and final approval at the July 11 meeting.

In other business, the board:

– Increased the stipend paid to elected board members from $7,200 to $15,000 per year. NID board members have not received an increase in 16 years. The board’s unanimous vote followed a public hearing process that attracted no speakers or written comments.

– Updated the district’s Drought Contingency Plan, based on a review of information from the 1977 and 1988 dry years. Water Operations Manager Don Wight said the district is making normal water deliveries this year but could implement the drought plan next year if the coming winter is dry.
