Celebration will honor nuns, help St. Joseph’s

This weekend doubles as a celebration for the Sisters of Mercy and a benefit for St. Joseph’s Cultural Center.

The Sisters of Mercy, who were active in Nevada County for more than 100 years, once lived in St. Joseph’s, site of a former convent and orphanage.

A pottery exhibit by Sister Mary Lavey will be at 5:30 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph’s Ghidotti Room.

A piano concert featuring Sister Claudette Schiratti will be at 8 p.m. Saturday at the center. There will also be a reading of the sisters’ Grass Valley history from “Journeys,” a book by Sister Kay O’Brien, mimed by Sister Gloria Heese. Sister Kay O’Brien will also read poetry.

Donations to benefit the cultural center’s restoration projects will be accepted at both weekend events.

St. Joseph’s Cultural Center is at 410 S. Church St., Grass Valley.
