CDF requires burn permits heading into summer

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said Nevada County residents outside of city limits and protected by CDF will have to utilize burn permits effective this week.

Permits can be obtained at CDF, USFS, Nevada County Consolidated Fire District and Grass Valley City Fire stations, depending on the resident’s jurisdiction. Burn permits are good for small piles four feet or less in diameter and may be used to burn dry vegetation only.

The following guidelines must be followed:

– Provide a 10 foot area free of flammable materials and vegetation around all burn piles

– Do not burn on warm, windy days.

– An adult must stay in attendance of the fire at all times.

– Have a water supply and shovel ready at all times.

– Make sure it is a burn day by calling 274-7928. Burn barrels or burning of household waste are no longer allowed.

When burning, watch where the smoke goes, be courteous to neighbors and do not smoke them out. Residents who burn are responsible to maintain control of their fire. If a fire escapes your control, you may be held criminally and civilly responsible for all costs associated with the suppression of the fire and the damage that it caused.

The Nevada County Fire Safe Council offers a free brush chipping program to residents as an alternative to pile burning. The service is available by calling 272-1122.
