Thrive on the bright side

Successful people — who thrive both in life and work — have developed the habit of looking on the bright side.
Not to say they don’t experience challenges like anyone else; they certainly do. But there is a difference between the victors and the victims: The victors have developed a strategy and habit to find and focus on more productive perspectives.
According to Dr. Martin Seligman, the Director of the Positive Psychology Center and Professor of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, this ability can be developed at any age.
I challenge you to try the following exercise for a week. Take a few minutes at the end of your day and ask yourself these two key questions:
1. What went well today?
2. Why did it go well?
Focus on three things that went well each day — from the mundane to the awesome. You can do more than three if you wish. However, the process of developing the ability to see and focus on the bright side will be fortified by doing just three each day.
Next, look into the why. Why did it go well? You will start to notice where your abilities exist and how people and things can and do come together in your favor. Entrain your brain to look for what is going well versus things not going well. See the amazing reasons why they are going well. Increase your gratitude by recognizing the things you are doing that lead to things going well.
As you focus on the “why” the feeling of goodness will expand inside of you.
Flex your gratitude muscle and develop the habit of thinking of these things often. According to Dr. Seligman, science proves if you do this for a week, depression will go down, happiness will go up, and an overall sense of well-being will be magnified and optimized in your life.
Isn’t an optimized life worth a few minutes at the end of each day? I’ll see you next week on the other side … the bright side.
