Susan George: Expand the reach of your marketing campaigns

Most destination websites have a section called “events”. Clicking on one of these sections reveals a list of local events ranging from street festivals, to art walks to agricultural tours and more. Typically the events are locally led and only in recent years travel industry leaders recognize they can play a major role in establishing the brand image of a destination. Many Nevada County events, though driven by local interests, have the panache to engage visitors and enhance the brand value of the community.

As a reminder to event promoters and tourism advocates, there are effective tools available that can expand the reach of marketing campaigns beyond local audiences and connect to visitors. These tools are available at no cost.

The Nevada County Community Calendar is a robust online calendaring system that receives and displays event submissions through participating Chamber of Commerce, KNCO Radio, Gold Magazine, and Arts Council websites. Submissions are not difficult. The calendar will prompt the submitter with questions and provide some optional drop-down answers. Upon submission to the calendar, the best description for an event should be short and to the point. Engaging bullet points can be very effective. A single submission on any one of the participating calendars, if tourism related, will automatically populate the other participating calendars.

Those looking for information about events can search from any participating website and the search can be filtered by event type or location. For example, a search can be specifically for “Concerts” in “Nevada City”. Selected events can then be added to personal calendars and information updates, reminders, and forwards to friends can be sent by email or text from the calendar system to a designated person.
