Grab a pint of locally brewed beer on tap, a smoothie or a glass of Nevada County wine and join a friend outside by the fire pit.
Sound like the newest restaurant or country club? Guess again.
The South Yuba Club’s new 27,000 square foot fitness facility, which sits on seven acres in Grass Valley, was carefully designed with the vision of being “a welcoming place for all ages,” with space for socializing before or after workouts.
“We want to encourage our members to stay and get to know each other,” said Mike Carville, who owns South Yuba Club with his father, Phil. “Take a class, relax in the sauna, then get something to eat.”
The Carvilles opened the South Yuba Club on Searls Avenue in 1999 and eventually expanded to two Grass Valley locations, both of which have since closed. With the Nevada City facility still thriving, the Carvilles were thrilled when a Berryhill Drive fitness club, formerly known as Club Sierra, came up for sale last year. Finally, Mike Carville said, they had found a facility large enough to accommodate “all the requests members have made over the years — a family place designed for recreation, fitness, socializing, unlimited childcare and programs for teens.”
Virtually everything was gutted except the exterior walls. Tim Brady, former owner of Tru-Line Builders, came out of retirement to take on the massive project.
“We hit the ground running,” said Carville. “We were building in real time — building and designing at the same time.”
On Saturday, community members are invited to a grand opening, deemed a “look but don’t touch” celebration and barbecue, giving guests their first look at the new $4 million-plus facility. Visitors will receive a voucher good for five free team-training classes, and — for those who join by March 12 — special initiation discounts.
Amenities will include a fully renovated and refurbished salt water pool, adjacent jacuzzi and sauna, all with a new air treatment system to eliminate condensation. In the gym, each of the fitness rooms boasts all new equipment, including free weights, weight machines, a circuit room, a cardio room, a 16-station boot camp cross training room, a separate core training and flexibility room and an activity room that can accommodate 60, as well as dedicated space for personal trainers and their clients. Additionally, a three-quarter mile walking trail around the property has been cleaned up and reinforced.
But two much-anticipated additions include a serene bamboo-floored yoga, Pilates and Barre room — far from the bustling weight room — and a tiered “spin room,” where stationary- bicycle riders can choose from a menu of “virtual rides,” which take participants to such places as New Zealand, Greece, Moab, Maui, even the Tour de France.
The “Bistro” will offer espresso, specialty drinks, beer, wine and items made fresh by the folks at Sierra Mountain Coffee Roasters, such as breakfast burritos, frittatas, “pocket” quiches, salads, sandwiches, muffins, protein bars and more.
Approximately 2,100 members have already signed up for the Grass Valley facility sight-unseen, said Carville, who will most likely put a cap at 3,000.
But Carville seems confident that the family’s enormous investment was well worth the effort — not just financially, but as a place to build a sense of community.
“We’re hoping members will think of the Berryhill club like a home away from home, a place that is a lot more than getting fit.”
