New math tutoring business opens in Nevada City

A Nevada City woman has launched a business offering math tutoring for high school and home-schooled students in Nevada and Placer counties.

Suzie Gemignani, a math scholar and engineer, said services with her business, The Math Academy, were available either at her office or at a client’s home. The cost is $30 per hour; discounts are available for groups and multi-session packages.

The Math Academy is an outgrowth of Gemignani’s long-standing practice of volunteering to tutor her friends’ children who needed math help for their Nevada Union High School classes.

Not only did Gemignani provide the support needed, she discovered that she loved working with students and getting them excited about math.

Math is a core competency that helps students and working professionals apply common analytics to everyday situations.

“I really love to help students develop their thought process in a logical way, and share their excitement as they start to really get how great math is as a system for life problem solving,”

Gemignani said.

Gemignani sees math as “really eye opening, because it is not abstract, but something that we can demonstrate. Math is beautiful and teaching math for me is both fun and creative.”

Once students begin to succeed — even a little — they tend to become curious and want how to test theories.

“Math is a tough subject to master, but once mastered it can be a great ally. I see it as an asset to any career.”

Sessions are available by appointment.
