For those in need of a budget-conscious way to spice up their space, Denise Wilson has a new interior design and furniture store in Grass Valley.

Wilson named her store Jane, her middle name, because her offerings mirror the simplicity the name implies.

“My tagline is ‘design made simple’ and it’s straightforward. There’s nothing frivolous about it. It’s just simple,” Wilson said. “Everything in the store is priced with tax included — all whole numbers. It’s intended to be an easy experience for people.”

Jane opened this week and offers services along with new and refurbished furniture in its 704 Whiting St. location.

“My whole goal is to provide interior design services to show (clients) how to re-purpose furniture,or arrange what is already existing and make a really comfortable environment for them,” Wilson said.

Wilson is an accredited staging professional, able to stage homes for realtors or those looking to sell or rent their place; she also provides interior design assistance.

“I try to make it as unintimidating as possible,” Wilson said. “I’m great at working with what people have.”

She worked as an interior and exterior decorator for seven years at Carbon River Homes in Tacoma, Wash., then moved to Maui to work for a furniture store after the housing market crashed.

“The furniture for the condos needed to be a durable product so renters wouldn’t destroy the pieces, and inexpensive so owners wouldn’t have to spend an arm or a leg,” she said.

Wilson fell in love with Nevada County after her son, a member of the Air Force, was stationed at Beale and moved to Lake Wildwood.

“I visited him over New Year’s and that cemented the whole thing,” Wilson said. “I thought, ‘This is where I need to be.’ I felt right at home.”

Wilson said the experience was fate after her time in Maui came to a close and she wanted to move elsewhere.

“I thought Maui was awesome in respect to things coming together when they need to,” Wilson said. “If you can tap into it, there’s an awesome existence and I think the same thing here in Grass Valley.”

The furniture in the store runs the gamut, Wilson said, though she personally likes the clean lines and balanced feel of a modern aesthetic.

“I’m a mid-century modern girl,” she said.

Some of the pieces include mid-century modern chairs for $50, lounge chairs for $145, a solid oak side table for $45 and vintage pieces from the 1930s, including a half moon table for $45.

The store also offers accessories that start at $12, artwork from $25 and up — though most average around $50 to $60 — and mirrors that all align with Wilson’s priority of affordable prices.

“I think the whole past four years have really changed people’s perspectives. People are looking differently at things,” Wilson said.

“It’s about using your money wisely, even among people who have money.”

Wilson’s philosophy is not only to save money, but also to reuse furniture to sustain the environment, she said.

“I think it’s doing something good,” Wilson said.

“It’s not just a matter of being a penny-pincher. You’re doing something good for the earth, as well.”
