MacDonald: Believe and GET to give
It’s the season where many parents are enthusiastically striving to keep a certain dream alive for their children. The dream of believing that someone or something magical still exists.
It’s nothing short of miraculous to see to what lengths a parent or grandparent will go in keeping the dream alive for their children’s innocent inquiry — as well they should. I’m not a big one for “shoulding,” but in this case, I’ll make an exception.
For many adults, however, they have given up on that relentless pursuit of their own dreams. Through the years, they have created an arsenal of thoughts, of which they believe to be true, from which they raid daily to keep themselves stuck in their complexity of mediocrity.
I would like to challenge you this week to believe again. Believe in your magnificence, your gifts, your talents, your passions, your beauty and your deservedness to really go for what is not too late. It is never too late. This is your life, and you absolutely deserve to experience what lights you up.
When we go for what we want, it is said that there are two types of pain: the pain of discipline and the pain of regret. The pain of regret far outweighs any pain of discipline. Don’t allow the ghost of the future to have any evidence that you didn’t believe you were worth going for what you want in this wonderful life.
Help that child in you develop the discipline for believing again that it is OK to go for and get what you really want. Empower yourself to go for what you want with the same enthusiasm as the child who will rip through the gifts anticipating what they have uncompromisingly asked for perhaps nothing short of 100 times during the month of December alone.
You may have heard the phrase, “Give to Get.” Here’s a twist for you. “GET to Give.” As in, Generate Enthusiastic Thanks (GET) to give yourself what you deserve. You deserve to experience whatever you can imagine for yourself. You otherwise wouldn’t have been able to summon the image. With that image comes the proportionate fortitude to make it happen. To uncork that magic, you simply must GET.
Develop the discipline to limit as best you can the thoughts that negate your going for your dreams. You can do this by GET’ing. Imagine, with gratitude, yourself already experiencing that which you so deeply desire. That’s what kids do so well, and it works.
Welcome your inner kid this season and GET to give yourself the magic of believing.
Make it up. Make it fun. And make it happen.
