GV moving company ‘Ernie’s Van & Storage’ expands to Rocklin

Ernie's Van & Storage has been in Grass Valley for more than 70 years.

Ernie’s Van & Storage, a locally based moving agent of Atlas Van Lines, has announced a new location in Rocklin that will help the company expand its business, while servicing a growing need from customers in Placer County.

“The majority of our business since the mid-1970s has been focused on residential moves,” General Manager Matthew Sowell said. “Opening our new facility in Rocklin gives us the ability to achieve one of our primary goals of breaking back into specialized transportation and national accounts business.”

Sowell says having a Rocklin facility closer to the Sacramento region will allow their company to gain traction on bigger corporate accounts that are not as available in Grass Valley, which is a smaller market.

“We love Grass Valley, we love everything about it, and we’re extremely committed to Nevada County,” Sowell said. “But it hasn’t’ really given us an opportunity to divulge into national accounts or corporate relocation because we don’t have the corporations in Grass Valley like Sacramento does.”

Since 1935, the Sowell family has operated Ernie’s Van & Storage out of its main 20,000 square-foot facility located on the 100 block of Spring Hill Drive in Grass Valley. Specializing in full service residential, commercial, industrial and corporate moving and storage, the company has served Nevada and Placer counties, along with all of the Northern California Gold Country.

The moving company, though, will be expanding for the first time since 1976 by opening a new 10,000 square-foot location in Northeast Rocklin.

“We’ve always done business in Placer county on a large scale, and its gotten to the point where we’re generating so much business out of Placer that we really needed to branch out,” Sowell said. “We grew from the inside out, it wasn’t something where we said ‘Well we’re going to do this and hopefully it works,’ we did it out of necessity. We were naturally taking on this course.”

Sowell added, “We have the personnel in place to handle the expansion. We have reorganized our corporation since the recession in a way that has enabled us to take this leap with minimal disruption to our business.”

As a moving agent of Atlas Van Lines, a national moving company with nearly 500 Atlas interstate moving agents, Ernie’s Van & Storage was named one of Atlas’ top 32 agents, and received the company’s world class commitment award.

“Ernie’s Van & Storage has been a reputable agent of ours for more than 16 years,” vice president of agency development at Atlas Van Lines Steve Hermann said. “The company’s outstanding team and commitment to bring the absolute best services to their customers will be two of the driving factors in their success in this new market. We are proud to be a part of Ernie’s exceptional moving services.”

Anywhere from five to 10 employees will staff the company’s new Rocklin facility, and Sowell said the company will enact the same business principles they have had for almost 80 years.

“We have a specific way of doing things different from other companies in our industry,” Sowell said. “So we’re not going to come into that area and take over, we’re starting from the ground up and letting it grow as much as the public allows it to.”
