Bush a progressive?

Those of you who seem to enjoy reading some of my letters to the editor and know how critical I have been of what President Bush has been doing may be surprised to know that I applaud his issuing a “Get Out Of Jail” card to Scooter Libby. I applaud it, not because Scooter was innocent of crimes but because the incarceration of Libby, as punishment for what he did, would have no positive effects other than to possibly warn others in the administration that they cannot continue violating the constitution.

In fact, punishment is always wrong and always has more negative than positive effects. Incarceration is necessary and desirable only when the individual is a continuing threat to society or needs rehabilitation or training to prevent recidivism. This is not true in Libby’s case.

Yes, President Bush is now becoming a real progressive.
