Buddhist monks spend two weeks at St. Joseph’s

The monks from Gaden Shartse Monastery are back and this time with a reincarnate rinpoche in the group, a rare event.

He and the Green Tara mandala the monks are constructing can be visited at St. Joseph’s Cultural Center, Grass Valley, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. until the mandala dissolution ceremony on Sunday, Jan. 30.

For tour coordinator and the only western monk at the monastery in India, Lobsang Wangchuk, this is his fifth visit to Grass Valley/Nevada City, which he says, “Has been very good to us. We are well taken care of here.” While the year and a half tour usually means only a week in each city, our area gets the pleasure of having the monks for two weeks. Proceeds go to help maintain the more than 2,000 monks who live in the monastery.

Other events featuring the monks include:

• 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 22 – Dharma talk on the Four Noble Truths.

• 7 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 22 – Sacred music and dance.

• 3 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 23 – Manjushri empowerment.

• 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan 26 – Dharma talk on patience and compassion.

• 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 28 – Talk on Tara Mandala followed by the Tara ritual.

• 3 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 30 — Mandala dissolution ceremony
