Bruins football: Week-by-week matchups
Capital Christian (Sacramento)
vs. Bear River
7:30 p.m. Sept. 12
The Bruins, who have never played Capital Christian before, will be able to test their hand with this Golden Empire League team. The Cougars finished 9-3 last year, including a huge win over 2007 Bear River opponents Marysville (40-6) and loss against Pioneer Valley League rival El Dorado (31-29).
Calaveras (San Andreas) vs. Bear River
7:30 p.m. Sept. 19
Calaveras went 8-3 in 2007, leading the Mother Lode league. In fact, the Redskins are perennial powers in the Mother Lode, going 9-2 in 2006, 10-1 in 2005 and 10-2 in 2004. The team’s history matches us up well with the Bruins.
Bear River at Woodcreek
7:30 p.m. Sept. 26
Last time (2007): Bear River 9, Woodcreek 7 ” The Bruins edged the Timberwolves with a game-winning field goal by Jared Murnan with 59 seconds left. It was a redeeming moment for Murnan, now a graduate, who had missed an extra point earlier in the game. Woodcreek lost all of its games in 2007.
Directions: Take Highway 65 toward Lincoln. At Washington Boulevard, turn left (south). At Pleasant Grove Boulevard, turn right (west). At Woodcreek Oaks Boulevard, turn left (south).
Bear River at Colfax
7:30 p.m. Oct. 3
Last time (2007): Colfax 28, Bear River 0 ” The Bruins were shut out in the last game of the season last year, which also killed the team’s playoff hopes.
Coaches are hoping that playing the team’s rival early in the season takes some of the pressure off players come game time. The Falcons return star running back Jeff Devine and quarterback Spencer Lewis.
Directions: Take Highway 174 to Colfax. Turn right on Main Street just before the railroad bridge (also marked for Historic Colfax). At the second stop sign, turn right on Grass Valley Road and continue to the stop sign at Rising Sun Road. Turn left on Rising Sun and continue to the stop sign. Turn right on Ben Taylor Road. Colfax High School is the second school on the left.
Bear River at Lindhurst
7:30 p.m. Oct. 10
Last time (1995): Bear River 54, Lindhurst 6 ” The Bruins, who haven’t faced the Blazers in 13 years, lead the all-time series 2-0. Lindhurst is coming off a 10-3 year in which they led the Golden Empire League.
Directions: From Highway 65, Approaching Marysville, turn left (west) on the McGowan Parkway exit. At Olive Avenue, turn right (north) and follow Olive Avenue to the school.
Whitney vs. Bear River
7:30 p.m. Oct. 17
Last time (2007): Whitney 28, Bear River 12 ” The Wildcats handed Bear River its first loss last season, with their top running back Zack Graves rushing for 259 yards and two touchdowns in the effort.
Graves returns to lead the co-PVL champions this season and the Bruins hope to shut down the speedy back.
Bear River at Placer
7:30 p.m. Oct. 24
Last time (2007): Placer 24, Bear River 23 ” The loss to Placer last year put a lot of pressure on the Bruins to win out in the PVL. This year, coaches will be wary of the league sleeper, which finished 3-7 last season.
Directions: Take Highway 49 to Auburn. Turn right (east) at Lincoln Way. At the stoplight, turn right (south) on High Street. At Finley Street, turn left (east). At Orange Street, turn right (south). School is on Orange Street.
Mesa Verde vs. Bear River
7:30 p.m. Oct. 31
Last time (2007): Bear River 35, Mesa Verde 14 ” Christopher Parfitt led the Bruins with 114 rushing yards against the Mavericks last year. Mesa Verde finished 3-7 overall last year and 1-5 in the PVL. The Mavericks return quarterback Andrew Greene.
Bear River at Lincoln
7:30 p.m. Nov. 7
Last time (2007): Bear River 39, Lincoln 8 ” The Bruins dominated the Fighting Zebras by virtue of their defense, taking away three fumbles and snatching two interceptions. The Zebras finished 5-5 overall, 3-3 in the league and return quarterback Tyler Freemond.
Directions: Take Highway 65 exit to Lincoln. Once in Lincoln, turn left (west) on 7th Street. At J Street, turn right (north).
El Dorado vs. Bear River
7:30 p.m. Nov. 14
Last time (2007): Bear River 24, El Dorado 21 ” Trevor Peterson caught three touchdowns to give the Bruins a scare, but a late push secured Bear River’s win. El Dorado finished 4-6 overall and 1-5 in the PVL.
