Bruin JV scores comeback win

After watching a Marysville running back break away for an apparent 90-plus yard touchdown that looked to seal a win over Bear River’s junior varsity Friday night, the Bruins came back for a 10-9 win over the hosts.

A personal foul wiped away the Marysville touchdown run and Bear River’s defense forced Marysville to punt the ball back to the Bruins with nearly three minutes remaining in the game and Bear River trailing 9-7.

The Bruins (3-1) then methodically marched down the field to set up a potential, game-winning 18-yard field goal by Jason Varni.

Varni not only hit the kick once, but twice.

After his first kick split the uprights, Marysville was flagged for an offsides penalty to move the ball one yard closer to the end zone. But rather than risk a fumble on a run, Bear River head coach Duane Zauner sent Varni back in to make the kick again.

“He also had a 68-yard touchdown run for us and kicked the extra point after that,” Zauner said. “It’s a big win for us, a great day for us.

“This team has some real ability, but they have to go out and find some heart, yet.”
