Bruce Kelly Trio plays this weekend

The Bruce Kelly Trio will play from 7:30 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday upstairs at the Bellavista Ristorante in the Creekside lounge (formerly Kirby’s Creekside).

Kelly, a longtime resident of Los Angeles, has performed with many of the city’s best jazz musicians.

Since moving to Nevada City 12 years ago, Kelly has performed in various venues in Reno, Lake Tahoe and Sacramento with West Coast jazz drummer Matt Marucci. Last year, he opened for Wynton Marsalis at the Northern California Center for the Arts.

After a gig at the Los Angeles jazz club Spazio’s, one critic said Kelly’s smooth baritone is reminiscent of Billy Eckstein, Johnny Hartman and Lou Rawls while retaining his own distinct style and tone. He performs standards, classic jazz swing songs and ballads with a little blues thrown in to spice it up.
