Sage Po, a 13-year-old harpist, won first prize in the 13-to-18-year-old division of the American String Teachers’ Association Sacramento Chapter Competition.

Po, a student of Twin Ridges Home Study Charter School and San Juan Ridge resident, now goes on to the association’s California state competition in the fall.

Po also recently won the 2007 American Harp Society Kids For Camp scholarship. She also stood first in her age division at the Music in the Mountains young musicians’ competition as well as in the Inez Stafford Competition of the Bay Area chapter of the American Harp Society.


A community swimming pool that was built last year at Bear River High School opened its doors to the public on June 18.

The pool offers open recreation time for children and adults on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.

There’s also adult lap swimming Monday through Friday from 6 to 7:30 a.m., Monday through Thursday from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon.

An informal recreation time at the pool is also available for children and adults on Fridays from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. June 22 to August 10. During this time, one can play inner-tube water polo, pool basketball, lawn badminton or simply relax by the pool.

This is a deep-water swimming pool. It’s not suitable for non-swimmers, unless they’re accompanied by an experienced swimmer. Children under 12 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

Placer Nature Center in Auburn is offering a week-long nature camp for preschoolers from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. July 30 to Aug. 3.

At the camp, held at the Nature Center’s garden, preschoolers will learn art, music and study nature under the care of trained teen camp leaders and the center’s staff members.

The cost is $60.

Registration will be open until the camp starts, but those interested are encouraged to apply as soon as possible due to limited space.
