Vienna Saccomanno and Alison Helmen of Forest Charter School won the third place in the California State Science Fair at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

The team had earlier won the first place in the Nevada County Science Fair in spring.

At the Los Angeles fair, the Forest Charter students competed against participants from across the state.

Luke T. Johnson was awarded the Master of Journalism degree by the University of British Columbia on May 23 at a ceremony in Vancouver.




Johnson is a 1998 graduate of Nevada Union High School. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn.

One of Johnson’s radio features won an award and was broadcast nationally in Canada on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (Canada’s equivalent to PBS).

He is the son of Richard and Lois Johnson of Grass Valley.

Christopher Campbell, a 2000 graduate of Nevada Union High School and a 2004 graduate of University of California, San Diego, graduated from University of California, Los Angeles, School of Law on May 11.

While studying law, Campbell was a member of the UCLA Journal of Law and Technology, a distinguished advocate in the UCLA Moot Court Honors Program, externed for a U.S. District Court judge, and assisted in a policy study on homelessness in Los Angeles.

Chris is the son of Stu and Paula Campbell. He plans to begin working in the fall for Latham and Watkins, a law firm in San Francisco.

Samantha Joy Corn, a 2003 graduate of Nevada Union, graduated from California State University at Long Beach on June 1 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance.

Corn is the daughter of Dick and Adria Corn of Grass Valley.

Tim Van Wagner graduated from Pitzer College in Claremont on May 13 with a bachelor’s degree in sustainable agriculture with a minor in art.

Wagner is a 2003 graduate of Nevada Union High School. He is the son of Tom and Ginger Van Wagner.

Carrie Cummins, a Grass Valley-based private piano instructor, is presenting two free recitals of her students on June 10 at the Calvary Bible Church on Colfax Highway.

The recitals take place at 2 and 4 p.m. with a reception at 3 p.m.

There will be a total of about 45 performers, including children in the age group of 6 to 18.

The genres of music played will include classical, contemporary and jazz.
