BREAKING NEWS: Morning chase ends in charges of kidnapping, evading police

A Nevada City man was arrested Sunday morning on charges including kidnapping and evading police after a short, high-speed chase through downtown Grass Valley, according to police reports.

A Grass Valley Police officer got behind Matthew Roberts’ vehicle at 6:50 a.m. because he was driving erratically, police reports stated. Roberts then reportedly ran a stop sign on Colfax Street near Highway 49 and the officer attempted to pull him over.

Instead of stopping, Roberts, 20, ran two more stop signs and turned onto Bennett Street and sped up to 75 mph, police said. The officer gave up the chase for safety reasons and went to meet with another officer who had an idea of who the suspect was.

As they were meeting, Roberts showed up again and drove down a dirt road between Bennett and Whispering Pines Lane, which was blocked, with police following.

Roberts reportedly swerved to avoid pipes in the road and crashed into a ditch. Police said two female passengers, one of whom was pregnant, told authorites they begged Roberts to let them out of the car.

Roberts was arrested on suspicion of recklessly evading a police officer, kidnapping and false imprisonment, all felonies; and an suspicion of possession of controlled substance paraphernalia, possession of a switchblade and driving with a suspended license, all misdemeanors.
