Born to run

Apparently, the phrase “born to run” is more than a catchy lyric. Scientists now believe that features such as our upright stance, short forearms, and “well-defined buttocks” evolved not from walking but from the need to cover long distances for food.

The modern era has eliminated the need to run for survival, or has it? Despite advances in medicine, neglecting exercise can lead to major health concerns, such as obesity, heart disease, hypertension and diabetes.

As one of the most natural, a time-efficient and inexpensive form of exercise, running is something most of us can do to maintain or improve our health. It doesn’t take much to get started.

A doctor’s O.K. is a good idea as are properly fitted running shoes. A safe place to run may be a local trail, a quiet road or high school track. Meet a friend for extra motivation.

While physically challenging at first, a walking start and walking breaks make running manageable. Sticking with running for the first three weeks takes determination.

Before long, though, you’ll be walking less, running more and feeling more energized. Brush your teeth, set a goal for yourself, and go out and run. You may change your life. Remember, you were born to run.
