“Limbo”

by Melinda Monaghan

If you enjoy reading you will be pleasantly surprised to discover local author Melinda Monaghan. Her new novel, “Limbo,” was quite a find for me. Her protagonist, Allison, finds herself in a place in her life that is almost untenable: divorced from her husband and estranged from her two children, living alone in a city she feels no part of. A phone call in the middle of the night from her ex-husband, Charles, turns her already fragile life entirely upside down. Her son has been accused of vicious sexual assault and murder, and she is thrown back into the middle of a family and community she no longer knows, not to mention a legal system she used to believe in.

Monaghan brings to life characters who are real, with real feelings and honest emotions. The catastrophes Allison and her family endure grip your heart and hold you completely involved to the very end.

“Limbo” is a step in a different direction and puts you in a different set of shoes than the typical legal thriller. You sit on the other side of the courtroom and deal with how the other half lives. I absolutely loved this book. “Limbo” is a perfect companion for these long, cold winter days.
