Book Review: "Eye of the Bear"

“Red River of Gold”

by Naida West

I highly recommend two books written by Naida West. The first one is “Eye of the Bear.” I started reading her novels because they are based on real-life histories in the California Gold Country during the early- to mid-1800s.

‘”Eye of the Bear” recounts the lives of California Indians at the time the California missions and Fort Ross were being established.

“Red River of Gold” is set in the 1850s. This book follows the life of the oldest Donner family girl, Elitha Cumi Donner as she survives among American Indians, California’s uneventful entry into the Union, the Gold Rush and John Sutter.

I couldn’t put these books down. They will not be passed on to friends since I know I will want to reread them myself.
