Book explores hauntings in San Francisco

Mark Lyon, the local actor, writer and Haunted Nevada City tour guide, has published his book,”San Francisco Ghosts,” and says this is the first comprehensive account of true hauntings in the city. He has been collecting such stories since his days as an undergraduate at the University of San Francisco, back in the late 1960s.

“Back then,” Lyon recalls, “very little had been recorded on the subject. Even the great San Francisco columnist and ultimate authority on all things concerning ‘The City,’ Herb Caen, confided to me that he had not heard even one San Francisco ghost story!”

Over a period of years, Lyon conducted numerous interviews, collected newspaper accounts, scoured piles of obscure books and even personally investigated a haunted house. The result: More than 100 true tales, including the terrifying “House of the Howling Demons,” the deadly curse of Sutro Heights, California’s earliest recorded love story and Mary Ellen Pleasant’s “House of Mystery.”

The book is available at local bookstores. Contact Lyon at 265-6877.
