Big O Tires and Riebe’s Auto Parts have joined together to offer a free Women’s Car Care Clinic from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 18 at 11571 Nevada City Highway.

The one-time clinic will show women how to change a flat tire, check fluid levels, and teach the basics of tires, brakes, shocks, and how they relate to their vehicles’ safety on the road. Complimentary gift bags and snacks will be provided to all participants. For more information, call Big O Tires at 272-1633.


Visitors to south Nevada County now have a place to gather information about the area. The South Nevada County Chamber of Commerce opened a new office and visitors’ center in the Higgins Corner development. The space is located at 10063 Combie Road, Suite C.

To staff the office daily from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Chamber’s board of directors is looking for volunteers. Anyone interested in helping the nonprofit business organization can call 268-7622 or visit the Web site at


In other Higgins Corner news, all space has been leased at 10063 Combie Road. The building across from the new Longs Drug Store will house Placer Title Company and Century 21.


Loana’s Place has recently relocated to Old Tunnel Road in the Nevada City Senior Apartments. The salon was previously located on Colfax Highway. Loana can still be reached by calling 272-4611.


Citizens Bancorp has announced its earnings for the fourth quarter and year-end of 2003. For the 12-month period ending Dec. 31, net income was $1,001,000, an increase of 16.7 percent over the same period in 2002. Basic earnings per share for the year were $0.67, compared with $0.59 for 2002. For the year, diluted earnings per share were $0.65, compared to $0.57 the previous year.

Total assets for Citizens Bancorp reflect certain one-time costs associated with the merger of Citizens Bank of Nevada County into a holding company structure and legal costs associated with the issuance of trust preferred securities. These expenses, net of tax, were $51,000, or $0.03 per share, according to Citizens Bancorp.


Highland Commercial has been given affiliate status by Irvine-based Sperry Van Ness, a national commercial real estate investment firm. Highland Commercial owner Lock Richards will serve as a senior adviser for Sperry Van Ness/Highland Commercial.

Richards has 20 years of experience in commercial real estate. He has secured more than 150 transactions in his career. Richards is currently a licensed California real estate broker and an active member in several local organizations, including the Economic Resource Council, the Board of Realtors and the Nevada County Business Association.
