Mounds of chopped firewood sits ready to be distributed during this Saturday’s big senior firewood distribution held by Gold Country Senior Services.

Volunteers from Nevada Union High School, Twin Cities Church, 49er Rotary, Gary’s Place, Kiwanis, and other groups have committed to volunteer for the event which includes some deliveries to seniors who can’t get the wood themselves. “We like to say that the firewood program is more than just firewood, we give out shelf stable foods,” Gold Country Senior Services’ Nicole Grimes said. “For a lot of our clients we provide a connection when they have out of state children.”Grimes anticipates distributing about 100 deliveries this next weekend and about 250 total cords of wood distributed to seniors who need help keeping warm during the winter. To get on the list, give Gold Country Senior Services a call in the Spring at (530) 273-4961 to get on the list for the next winter season.

Volunteers stacked mountains of chopped wood from piles and into the backs of vehicles Saturday at the Brunswick and E. Bennett Road distribution center. This Saturday morning the area will be bustling with activity again as a big volunteer distribution effort is planned.
