Betty Hess

Memorial services for Betty Sharon Hess will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 4, at the Penn Valley Community Church, 11739 Spenceville Road in Penn Valley.

Mrs. Hess died Saturday, May 20. She was 68.

She was born on March 2, 1938, in Wooster, Ark., to Edna and William Burgess. She was the seventh out of eight children. The family moved to California where she met and married Larry Hess Jr. They moved with their daughters to Cedar Ridge in 1967. They owned two restaurants and an excavation business, and were among the original artisans for Nevada City’s Victorian Christmas. She enjoyed making quilts and fabric crafts and enjoyed gold panning and participating in car shows with Larry.



She is survived by daughters Sharon Hess of Nevada City, Patricia “PJ” Hess of Grass Valley, Judy and Tom Nigh of Myrtle Creek, Ore., Rosemary and Dale Russell of Eugene, Ore., and Carolyn Grandell of Grass Valley; siblings Bob and Lois Burgess of Alaska, Jim and Lynette Burgess of Washington, John and Betty Burgess of Pioneer, Paul and Darla Burgess of Tracy, Edna Burgess and Montean Hobbs, both of Alaska; 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Larry Hess Jr. in 1999; parents, Edna and William Burgess; sister, Nila Hall; brother, Bill Burgess; and half-sister, Ival James.
