Bertha Allen

A celebration of life for Bertha Mae Allen of Grass Valley will be conducted later. Interment will be at San Jacinto Valley District Cemetery.

Mrs. Allen died Sunday, Oct. 13, at a local medical facility. She was 91.



She was born Aug. 3, 1911, in Alamosa, Colo., to James and Mollie (Suggs) Pendley. She was one of 12 children. She traveled from Colorado to Texas with her family by covered wagon. They later moved to California, where she graduated from high school in Lancaster.

At age 19, she married Pat Foddrell, and they moved to Arcadia. She worked with him in the grocery store they owned in the area, and continued to work in the business until retiring in 1974.




In 1975, she moved with her third husband, Fred Allen, to Hemet, where they were active in the Hemet Elks Lodge. In 1996, she moved to Nevada County to be near her family.

She is survived by her daughters Patricia McKinley of Lafayette, Carolyn Gutendorf of Penn Valley and Donna Foddrell of Grass Valley; seven grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
