Bernice Pingree

Memorial services for Bernice Black Pingree of Grass Valley will be conducted at 11 a.m. Aug. 10 at the Nevada City chapel of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.

Mrs. Pingree died Tuesday, July 23, in Grass Valley. She was 92.

She was born May 4, 1910, in Grass Valley to William and Lois (McPhee) Black. She attended Clear Creek School and Grass Valley High School. She spent her childhood summers riding horses at mountain cattle pastures near Bowman Lake. She graduated from California State University at Chico.



She taught in Placer and Nevada County schools, beginning in 1929. She was the first principal in the Pleasant Ridge School District. She married Herbert “Herb” Pingree in 1934.

She was a 50-year member of the Aurora Chapter of Eastern Star and was a member of the Nile Club and the Nevada County Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed traveling, crossword puzzles and playing pinochle.




She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law Loren and Judy Pingree of Brookings, Ore., and Jerry and Ellen Pingree of Hollister; daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Frank Ames of San Bruno; grandchildren Mike, Dan, Tiffanie, Jon, Amanda, Lorilyn, Larry and Jennifer; and 27 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; sister, Dorothy Richards; and great-granddaughter Whitley.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
