Benefit for upcoming Indigenous Peoples Days Event set for tonight

The local Tsi-Akim Maidu Tribe will present three short films from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at the Madelyn Helling Library, 980 Helling Way, Nevada City to benefit the upcoming Indigenous Peoples Days Event to be held in Nevada City on Oct. 8, 9, 10 and 11.

“Wisdom of the Elders” will revisit the Descendants Talking Circle of 2009.

“Uma Totodom-Gathering Together” is a film highlighting how the tribe and the community at large are coming together to heal the wounds between people, the salmon and water, and the Sierra Native Alliance Youth Conservation Corps will preview a film about their work on the restoration of the Alta Vista Nature Trail and other watershed projects in the region.

Made by the NYCC interns, this video documents the restoration work accomplished by the youth conservation corps this summer along with knowledge of culture, environment and traditional land management practices gained in the program.

Donations will be accepted at the door.
