Bear River softball takes section crown

Brian Hamilton

STOCKTON ” After surviving an 11th-inning thriller in the first game of a championship doubleheader, Bear River’s softball team scored a 1-0 win over East Union to claim the first Sac-Joaquin Section softball championship in school history today.

The Bruins (28-4) scored the only run in the game when freshman Courtney Ceo stole home in the third inning. That was all the offense Bear River would need, as junior pitcher Kelly Shepard threw a one-hit shutout to seal the victory.

Bear River won the first half of the twinbill, 6-2, after the two teams headed to extra innings with a 1-1 tie after seven. Each team scored one run in the 10th inning, but Bear River broke the game open in the top of the 11th with four runs on two hits and two errors.

Bruin senior Britney Ceo picked up the win in game one, going the distance while striking out six and scattering seven hits.

East Union pitcher Erin Arevalo threw both games for the Lancers, racking up 27 strikeouts while allowing 10 hits in 17 innings pitched.
