The Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival runs from tonight through Aug. 17 at Lake Tahoe’s Sand Harbor State Park. On the schedule are Richard III, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and CAMBIO (an original musical set in modern day Havana, based on the Victor Hugo novel “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”).

The festival has been running for 36 years. Once partnered with Foothill Theatre Co., based in Nevada City, the festival is unveiling this season its own production team that is responsible for everything from costumes and choreography to set design and technical direction. Its new in-house cast was assembled from nationwide auditions, said Artistic Director Jan Powell.

“Our performances are elevated from previous years and audience members seeking a true theatrical experience will find that it has raised the bar to a new level, especially in regards to talent,” Powell said. “There are a lot of new faces that are anxious for the season to begin.”

Tickets for the 2008 season are now available online at with reduced handling fees for all online purchases, or by calling 888-32-SHOWS (888-327-4697). Tickets start at $22 for open seating tiers and range in options up to the premier reserved seating section from $67. More information is available online.
