Cain Society gives out proceeds

The Joe Cain Society of California is donating $500 to four Nevada County organizations. The money is from proceeds of the annual Joe Cain Ball and Procession in February.

This year’s recipients are the Western Nevada County chapter of the American Red Cross, Women of Worth, AnimalSave and Nevada County Literacy Program.

A total of $2,000 was donated, twice the usual contribution.

The nonprofit Joe Cain Society of California has put on the procession and related activities for 10 years.

The society will pull out of next year’s procession because of liability concerns, said Curt Colagross , a co-founder and current treasurer of the society.

Schoolhouse photo show accepts entries

Entries are being accepted through Wednesday for North Columbia Schoolhouse Cultural Center’s annual community photography show, which will be up from Nov. 7 to Dec. 9.

Each entrant may submit up to three pieces, accompanied by a fee of $5 per entry. Checks should be made payable to the cultural center.

Each entry must be self-contained, framed and ready for hanging or placement.

The Schoolhouse will take a 15 percent commission on all works sold during the show. Awards will be presented to artists.
