Author of ‘Bodie’s Gold’ to speak

Marguerite Sprague, author of “Bodie’s Gold: Tall Tales and True History From a California Mining Town,” will discuss her book at Odyssey Books on Feb. 5.

In September 2002, the former boomtown of Bodie was proclaimed California’s official Gold Rush ghost town. In Bodie, located on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada 130 miles south of Reno, more than 170 buildings in a state of “arrested decay” are still standing today.

Bodie reached its peak in the late 1870s and early 1880s with nearly 10,000 residents and more than 60 saloons and dance halls. Sprague’s book focuses on life in Bodie and its residents. The author used primary sources whenever possible, from the first mining claims to interviews with former Bodie residents. She also traced Bodie legends, leading to a few historical corrections of long-standing beliefs.

Sprague’s free reading begins at 7 p.m. Odyssey Books is at 11989 Sutton Way, Grass Valley. Call 477-2856 for more information.
