Author J.S. Holliday speaks tonight in Nevada City

J.S. Holliday will discuss “Failure Be Damned! The Origins of California’s Risk-taking Culture” at tonight’s “Author Night.”

Historian Holliday wrote “The World Rushed In: The California Gold Rush Experience” and “Rush For Riches: Gold Fever And The Making Of California.” The Los Angeles Times selected “Rush For Riches” as one of “The Best Books of 2000” and The Chronicle stated, “‘Rush For Riches’ is monumental. It is a book to pass on to your children.”

Tonight’s free “Author Night” opens with Rick Toles portraying “Alkali, The Last of the 49ers” through song and story, followed by local historian Bob Wyckoff talking about his book, “Never Come, Never Go! The Story Of Nevada County’s Narrow Gauge Railroad,” recently reprinted in a second edition.

The presentation begins at 7 p.m. in the Eric Rood Administrative Center’s Board Chambers off of Highway 49 in Nevada City. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the County of Nevada and The Friends of the Nevada County Libraries.
