Artist of the week: Keith Brown
(Editor’s note: The artist of the week is shared by two this time – Keith Brown and Kurt Niederhaus. Each has a local show coming up.)
Career/title: I am an architect and a professional artist for Christ.
Describe your art: I am a representational or realist.
I paint and sketch historical scenes and western landscapes including scenes from Yosemite where I have a family history.
Oil on canvas and pencil are my mediums.
How long doing it? I have been painting for about 45 years.
Why do you do it? I enjoy it immensely; it allows me to create images of places I would like to be or have visited.
What do you hope to accomplish? To provide enjoyment for those who appreciate the particular type and style of art that I do.
Does your art convey a message? Yes, but only in the sense that it provides a feeling of adventure or nostalgia for the viewer.
Where do you want to be with this in the future? I would like to be able to continue to expose my work to as many people as possible.
Any special training required? Basically no, but it would be helpful to understand the basics of oil painting: mixing colors, good composition and a cursory knowledge of perspective.
Favorite part? Finishing a painting because it has come out either as good or better than I had hoped.
Least Favorite part? Starting a painting because I am not quite sure if its going to turn out the way I envisioned it.
Time it takes? It varies from painting to painting.
It depends on the size of the painting and how much time I have in a week to devote to it because art is not my full time job, but I would like it to be.
Is it hard to do? Not necessarily except when a painting isn’t coming out the way I want, then it is a struggle to get it where I want it to be.
Other comments: I am happily married with three grown children.
You can view my artwork at hadleylicensing.com, they are the agency that licenses my work for Christmas cards, puzzles, calendars, etc.
During the month of August I will be at Foothill Flowers every Thursday night from 6 Ð 9 p.m. autographing my first calendars of nationwide release from Pine Ridge Art Inc., as well as originals and limited edition prints.
My most recent painting of Grass Valley will be on display during the upcoming Nevada County Fair under, “best Nevada County scene.”
After the fair it will be on display at Foothill Flowers on Thursday evenings.
