Ms. Reinette Senum’s actions to help the planet are classic liberal, anti-capitalist, feel-good blather. Consider: An SUV traded for a motorcycle (do her groceries and parcels get home via a friend’s SUV?), light-bulb replacement (why not candles?), taking a roommate (a move to increase income or gain companionship?), cutting down meat consumption (what?), giving up her cell phone (another economic move?).

This supposedly noble list, which continues with dissatisfaction with Hurricane Katrina (what?) and the Bush administration (imagine that) makes a curious front-page spread. The post-petroleum economy will be marked not by Alliance for a Post-Petroleum Local Economy hand-wringing but by some bright people, most likely in the energy industries, who respond to the demands of 21st century society. March 26 must have been a slow news day in Nevada County.
