CASA training begins September 19

CASAs are screened and trained volunteers who get to know a foster child appointed to them by a judge. CASAs provide independent, objective information to the court about what the child needs. They also listen to, help, and support the child through the process of being a dependent of the court. Being a CASA requires a 35 hour training and about 10-15 hours a month visiting a child and working with the adults in the child’s life. CASA training runs Sept. 19 through Oct. 26, Mon. and Wed. evenings (no classes 10/17 and 10/19). For more information, visit http://www.considercasa.com.

Marketing volunteer needed for Read Up Literacy Program

Read Up is a free, adult literacy program that helps people strengthen their reading, writing and math skills by teaming them up with trained volunteer tutors. The Read Up program has been part of the Nevada County Library since 1998, and they are part of the network of 105 library-based literacy programs state-wide working with the California State Library. Currently the program could benefit from the assistance of an individual with professional marketing and/or public relations experience on a key project reaching out to the community. This project would not necessarily involve a heavy time commitment, and the bulk of the work could be accomplished from your own home.

Volunteer to assist the homeless at the new Streicher House Day Center, assist at local thrift shops, provide respite to caregivers, or become a docent at the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum. See these and many other interesting opportunities at http://www.volunteernevadacounty.org.
