Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) Volunteer Nevada County

Everyone is invited to share their time and talents with Nevada County nonprofits, public agencies, and schools. Over 75 local agencies need your help. View more volunteer opportunities at http://www.volunteernevadacounty.org and give us a call at 530-271-0255. Here is a sampling of what is available:

CASA: where your heart makes a home

A Court Appointed Special Advocate, or CASA, is a trained and supported volunteer who works directly with a child who has been removed from their home due to abuse or neglect. Working with professionals, and the court, a CASA listens, learns, and advocates for what is best for that child. Training will be held Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.; September 8 to October 8.

Share your English skills

Help English language learners become thriving members of our community by helping out as a one-on-one tutor. No prior teaching experience is necessary as ongoing training and mentoring by experienced tutors is provided. Sign up now for the next two day training on September 20th and September 27, 2014.

Phone bank

South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) needs your support in their ongoing effort to keep the Yuba River clean and safe for everyone. You can help Wednesday evening, September 3 by making ‘warm’ calls to members whose membership has expired. Training and pizza dinner is provided!

The Bear Yuba Land Trust needs volunteers to help with their summer events. BYLT has built 22 miles of community trails and created about 250 acres of publicly accessible open space. Whether your interests lie in set up, security, serving food, or directing traffic; the need is great. Upcoming Events: August 24 and September 28.

Strong outreach drivers needed

The Food Bank of Nevada County delivers food to housebound individuals once a month. A few new and back-up drivers are needed for the morning of the third Wednesday of every month. Volunteers each take a route with 7 or 8 individuals on it. You would need to bring your own truck or car with enough room to hold 8 banana boxes and bags of fresh produce. Can you lend a hand?

Reach out to seniors

Senior Information and Assistance and telephone reassurance needs your communication skills to connect seniors to local health and social service. Answer phones, make outgoing calls, and be comfortable using a computer. HelpLine is located in the RSVP offices. Volunteers are needed for shifts from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 12:30-4 p.m.

Creative minds

Help plan a brand new signature event. United Way runs events throughout the year for both fundraising and to benefit other non-profits in the community. If you are creative, like to help the community, and love to brainstorm; this opportunity could be the perfect fit for you. Be a part of a special project from start to finish.

Be the friendly face of Nevada County

This is a wonderful opportunity to be of assistance to citizens and the general public visiting our government center. Nevada County is looking for volunteers to assist as Lobby Greeters at the Rood Center in Nevada City. As a volunteer greeter, you will be an ambassador to our county. A desire to help people find local information is key.

Grass Valley Police Department

Become a police volunteer. The Grass Valley Police Department needs your help with various tasks for the department. Whether it’s car and foot patrol or traffic and crowd control for special events; act as “eyes and ears” to help keep our community safe. Must be 18 years old, possess valid driver’s license, have no felony convictions or warrants, and be ready to serve our community.

Home delivered meal drivers

If you enjoy helping seniors, and can follow written and visual driving directions, the Home Delivered Meals program needs your help. Drivers are needed for routes Monday through Friday. Two and one half hours once a week is all it takes to provide needed nourishment and care.

For persons 55 and over, accident, liability, and excess auto insurance are provided and limited mileage reimbursement is available. If you are interested in any of the positions, email us at rsvp3@nccn.net or call weekdays 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 530-271-0255. RSVP is part of the Corporation for National and Community Service and sponsored locally by the Area 4 Agency on Aging.
