John Francis and Evelyn Virginia Mitchell celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Aug. 30 at a barbecue at their Grass Valley home. The couple was married in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1945.

The Mitchells lived for a brief time in San Francisco, then moved to Sacramento where they lived for 12 years. Next they moved to the Natomas area, where they farmed walnuts and raised cattle.

In 1964, they relocated to Grass Valley due to the Sacramento International Airport being constructed on their acreage. They owned 200 acres where they raised beef cattle while John, a World War II pilot, commuted to McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento to work as an aircraft mechanic.

In 1970, John retired and built the house where they currently live. The Mitchells had three children, Charlotte (Mitchell) Bobisud (deceased), J. Douglas Mitchell and Mary (Mitchell) Robertson. They have five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
