John Francis Mitchell and Evelyn Virginia (McAdams) Mitchell celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary with family in Plymouth, Calif., on Aug. 30.

The couple was married in Jackson, Miss., on Aug. 30, 1945. They lived for a brief time in San Francisco, then moved to Sacramento where they lived for 12 years. Next they moved to the Natomas area where they farmed walnuts and raised cattle.

They relocated to Grass Valley in 1964 due to the Sacramento International Airport being constructed on their acreage in Natomas.

John, 94, is a World War II veteran who piloted B-17 bombers in the 94th Bomb Group of the U.S. Army Air Corps. Upon completion of his service in the war, John obtained employment as an aircraft mechanic at McClellan Air Force Base.

In addition to raising three children, Evelyn, 87, was actively involved in various school-related parent organizations throughout the years. She maintained their home and yard, assisted with managing the ranch activities and kept a vegetable garden, which resulted in an abundance of canned goods and preserves.

The Mitchells’ children are Charlotte (Mitchell) Bobisud (deceased), J. Douglas Mitchell and Mary (Mitchell) Robertson. They have five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
