Alzheimer’s educator to discuss, sign new book

Saturday at 3 p.m., Alzheimer’s educator Barbara Larsen will discuss and sign her newly released book, “Movement with Meaning: A Multisensory Program for Individuals with Early-Stage Alzheimer’s Disease,” at The Book Seller.

In this detailed book, Larsen extends a hand to those individuals with early Alzheimer’s disease, leading them down a path that shows them what they can still do and enjoy. Through photographs and step-by-step instructions, “Movement with Meaning” outlines Larsen’s therapeutic program for senior adult service providers and caregivers. The intent is to reinforce the remaining strengths and abilities of people with dementia by using interactive dance movements, yoga-inspired poses, and breathing exercises with music and poetry. Participants become focused in the present and enjoy reduced tension, improved balance and decreased disorientation.

Larsen is an education and family consultant for the Del Oro Caregiver Resource Center. Living in Nevada City, she has been working in the field of dementia care for 20 years and has been leading “Movement with Meaning” classes since 1998. This book is the culmination of her practical, hands-on experience.

Refreshments will be served. Call The Book Seller at 272-2131 for more information. The store is located at 107 Mill St. in downtown Grass Valley.
